Surama village is a small Amerindian community of the Makushi people living in the north Rupununi, in Region # 9. The word Surama, originally“SHURAMATA”, means the place of spoiled Bar-B-Que (or where Bar-B-Que spoiled). The name derived during a tribal conflict between the Makushi and Carib many, many years ago. Surama village is situated in 5 sq miles of savannah land, surrounded by forest, hills and mountains of the Pakariama mountain range. The lives of the people are captured in their art and in their understanding of how to live with nature. It is a simple and basic way of life, living according to the laws of nature.
Upon arrival in Surama you’ll receive a warm welcome from the village councillor and you’ll then have a chance to have a light snack and settle into your accommodation. A local guide will take you on a tour of the village. You’ll visit the local school, the medical centre and church along with some village houses. As the afternoon cools your guide will escort you for a short walk to explore the forest and observe its bird life.
In the evening you’ll be take on a walk to observe the nocturnal wildlife and see what the stars in the sky look like without a single light to dim their beauty.
